Carrickmacross Lions Club was formed in late 2008 and was sponsored by the Monaghan Town Lions Club. The inaugural Charter Night was held in March 2009 and since then, the Club has actively supported many local charities, good causes and local events as well as National and International appeals such as the Haiti earthquake and Japan Tsunami disasters. Our ongoing key project is the provision of a weekly bus service which takes Alzheimer patients from south county Monaghan to the Drumkill Day Care Centre in Threemilehouse.
Although a relatively new member of the Lions Clubs District 105-I Ireland, the Club has pioneered some innovative fund raising events including ‘Come Ceili with me’, the Twins Parade in 2010 for which the Club received the Lions Clubs PRO award and the Twins+ Parade in 2011. The events were part of the Carrickmacross June Bank Holiday Festival and attracted twins & multiples from all over Ireland and beyond which generated huge media attention and had a very positive effect for the town. Carrickmacross is now synonymous with Twins Parades!
It goes without saying that the amount of time and effort required to stage such events is huge and the success of these events is a testament to the unstinting dedication of the Carrickmacross Lions Club members – all volunteers. Furthermore, without the support of local people, businesses, sponsors, the Chamber of Commerce, the Festival Committee and Town Council, the Club would not be able to carry out it’s primary function of supporting local, national and international community service projects. Finally, a sincere thank-you to Bill Goggins from the Monaghan Lions Club who mentored us during our first 2 years of operation. The photo gallery records many of the events the Club has organized.
